What Role Does Trauma Play in Emotional Dysregulation?

Trauma often changes how someone experiences and responds to emotions. Children and teens may react with intense anger, shutdowns, or anxiety, while adults may show avoidance or numbness. How can caregivers and therapists distinguish trauma-driven reactions from other mental health conditions? What interventions seem most effective?

Trauma can disrupt the brain’s emotional regulation systems, making it harder to manage reactions to stress. People may experience intense mood swings, impulsivity, or heightened sensitivity to triggers. Early or repeated trauma often amplifies these effects, while supportive therapy can help rebuild regulation skills over time.
