Is PTSD Only About Major Traumatic Events?

Post-traumatic stress disorder can develop after repeated smaller stressors, neglect, or bullying, not just major accidents or abuse. Symptoms like hypervigilance, avoidance, and flashbacks may be subtle in teens. How can we recognize “complex PTSD” early? Which approaches help individuals regain safety and stability?

Not necessarily. PTSD can develop after major traumas like accidents, assaults, or combat, but it can also arise from chronic stressors or repeated exposure to distressing events, such as bullying, neglect, or emotional abuse. The key factor is the intense fear, helplessness, or horror experienced, not just the event’s scale.
