Many preteens experience sudden anger, tearfulness, or shutdowns in response to minor triggers. This may be linked to stress, trauma, or early exposure to overstimulation. How do parents and teachers differentiate typical mood swings from emotional dysregulation? What strategies support skill-building for managing emotions?

There’s a sense it feels more common, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s truly increasing. Better awareness, less stigma, and more open conversations make it easier to notice and talk about emotional struggles. At the same time, social pressures, screen time, and changes in social interaction can make emotional regulation harder for some kids.
