WHO lists burnout as an occupational phenomenon, not a mental disorder. Yet symptoms often mirror depression. Should companies offer mandatory mental health days?

At my work place, employees are given one week Wellness Week to relax and unwind. Our health is vital, so we need a break from our work.

My workplace also does that. They also don't allow you to work more that 44 hours a week because they do not want us to get burned out. I'm really enjoying working for the company so far.

This past week i have been dealing with depression in my work, not that am stressed but things are simply not going the way i want them to. I am working on overcoming this though.

I think burnout and depression can overlap, but they shouldn't be treated as the same thing. Burnout is often connected to prolonged work stress and may improve when the situation changes. Depression can affect someone even outside work and may need professional treatment. That’s why simply giving employees a mental health day isn’t always enough.

Burnout usually builds from prolonged work stress and may ease with rest or changes at work, while clinical depression can affect sleep, relationships, motivation, and life outside the job too. The two can overlap, so it’s risky to dismiss everything as being tired or needing a holiday. Workplaces also need to look at workloads and management, not just tell struggling employees to become more resilient.
