Does endless homework steal kids' sleep and peace at home?

I've seen situations where the kids are made to do a big chunk of home works every weekend. You will see the kids or their parents running around trying to complete home works. Do you think such big amount of homework is not stealing the sleep or relaxed minds of the students?
