How Can Routine Become Both Helpful and Restrictive?

Routines can provide stability, but overly rigid patterns may also create stress when unexpected changes occur. Flexibility is often needed. How do you balance structure with adaptability? What happens when your routine is disrupted?
 
Routine helps by creating structure, reducing stress, and making habits easier to maintain. But it becomes restrictive when it turns too rigid, leaving little room for flexibility, spontaneity, or adapting to change. Balance matters, structure should support life, not control it completely.
 
I hate when my routine gets disrupted or when plans get thrown off. With me dealing with anxiety, I often have to prepare myself for specific things that happen, and having a routine and a schedule set allows me to prepare myself for these things. When my routine is thrown off or plans are changed, I become very anxious, which has resulted in my shutting myself away rather than adjusting to the changes.

Having a routine means I can prepare myself, which in turn prevents me from being stressed and shutting myself away.
