A person experiencing depression may take longer to reply, cancel plans, or stop initiating conversations. Friends can struggle to understand whether they should keep reaching out or give space. How can depression change friendship communication, and what kind of contact feels supportive without becoming overwhelming?

I think depression can make communication with friends quieter and less frequent. Someone might take longer to reply, cancel plans, or stop sharing what they’re feeling. Friends may mistake that distance for disinterest, even though the person may actually want support but not have the energy to ask for it.

Depression can make communication with friends much harder. Someone may stop replying, avoid conversations, or seem distant even when they still care about the friendship. Low energy and negative thoughts can make ordinary conversations feel exhausting. Friends may also misunderstand the silence and assume the person simply doesn’t care.
