One of the worst things parents can do to their mentally ill children is to abandon them because of their illness. It's sad that this happens quite often, parents can't handle the fact that their children have a mental illness. When you were growing up, did it feel like your parents were distancing themselves from you because of your mental illness? How did you handle this situation and did you seek help from other family members instead?

My parents never distanced themselves from me upon knowing I was going through a lot of issues with my mental health; in fact, they became more supportive and helped me in any way that they could.

I have 4 children, and being that I suffer from mental health issues, I know what to look for and know how it can feel to not be listened to or not be heard, so I am always there for my children when it comes to anything to do with their mental health.

Unfortunately, the stigma behind mental health often means that some people will never believe mental health is real, and that is usually where you see parents distancing themselves from their kids.
