For a long time, I treated my anxiety like something I should be able to handle on my own. I’d have weeks where everything felt fine, then stretches where getting out of bed felt heavy. I didn’t talk about it much, even with people close to me.

What I did have was Biscuit, my dog. She never asked me to explain myself. She just needed a walk, breakfast, and some company, and meeting those needs gave my days a shape when my head felt chaotic. Slowly I realized she was a real part of how I coped.

Eventually I decided to talk to a professional about it. I went through My ESA Therapist, filled out an intake form, and was connected with a licensed mental health professional. What I didn’t expect was how much the conversation itself helped. Putting words to what I’d been feeling, and having someone listen without judgment, felt like exhaling after holding my breath for months.

The letter was a small part of the experience. The bigger part was finally taking my mental health seriously, and giving myself permission to say, “This matters, and so does the support I rely on.”

An honest note: an ESA letter isn’t a treatment or a cure, and it’s not right for everyone. If you’re struggling, a licensed professional can help you figure out what kind of support fits you. And if you’re ever in crisis, please reach out to a crisis line or emergency services right away.

If you’ve been quietly carrying something heavy, you don’t have to carry it alone. Be kind to yourself today, and give your favorite furry friend an extra cuddle.
