Some people explain themselves repeatedly because they are afraid others will interpret their words negatively. Even after being understood, they may continue adding details. Why does fear of being misunderstood lead to overexplaining, and how can it affect communication, confidence, and emotional energy?

I can understand why someone might overexplain when they’re worried about being misunderstood. They may feel the need to provide every detail so nobody gets the wrong impression. It can be exhausting, though, especially when you realize you’re explaining yourself far more than the situation actually requires. Thankfully, I am not that kind of person.

I sometimes catch myself overexplaining because I worry that people might misunderstand what I’m trying to say. It can be frustrating because a simple point can turn into a long explanation. Sometimes it helps to pause and remind myself that not everything needs to be explained in detail.

I sometimes overexplain because I worry that what I say might be taken the wrong way. Even after making my point, I may keep adding details to make sure the other person understands. Sometimes that makes a simple conversation much longer than it needs to be.
