Reality shows present curated lifestyles and drama. Do these portrayals inspire viewers, or do they create unrealistic expectations and increase stress and dissatisfaction with personal life? How can audiences critically engage without internalizing harmful comparisons?

Yes, reality TV can affect viewers’ self-perception. Frequent exposure to dramatized or idealized behaviors and appearances encourages social comparison, shaping expectations about body image, relationships, or success. This can lower self-esteem, increase insecurity, and create distorted beliefs about normal behavior or personal achievement.

I think reality shows mostly create unrealistic expectations because they exaggerate drama and present highly curated lifestyles. They can be entertaining, but comparing your life to what’s shown can increase stress or dissatisfaction. Audiences can stay critical by remembering it’s edited content, and enjoying it as entertainment rather than a standard to live up to.
