Being told that you are too sensitive or overreacting can gradually make you question your own feelings. This can happen in families, friendships, and romantic relationships. How does repeated emotional invalidation affect confidence and emotional wellbeing, and why can it become difficult to trust your own reactions?

Emotional invalidation can make someone feel like their feelings don’t matter. If it happens often, they may start doubting themselves, hiding emotions, or feeling guilty for being upset. In relationships, constantly hearing “you’re overreacting” can slowly affect confidence and make it harder to talk openly about problems.

Repeated emotional invalidation can slowly make someone question whether their feelings are reasonable. If you’re constantly told you’re too sensitive or overreacting, you may start ignoring your own reactions and relying on others to decide what you should feel. Over time, that can affect confidence and make expressing emotions feel unsafe.
