Do you guys know if there are any diseases that no longer exist? Like maybe it was a disease that wasn't overblown or not actually a problem. I heard hysteria is a mental illness that is no longer diagnosed because it's related to other things like anxiety. It also seemed to be paint women as sex crazed I hear, that's what a bit thing hysteria brings, or so I've heard. So you can see why that'd be outdated today.

But are there any mental illnesses that were once well known, are no longer a thing in our society? Either by just science proving its wrong or maybe it relates to a different illness. What do you guys think?

Mental disorders themselves don’t simply disappear, but how they are defined changes over time. Some past diagnoses, like hysteria or labeling homosexuality as a disorder, are no longer recognized. Advances in science and social understanding refine categories, replace outdated concepts, and introduce new ones, making mental health definitions more accurate, ethical, and aligned with real human experiences.

Several mental “diseases” no longer exist as diagnoses. Hysteria is now seen as anxiety or related conditions. Neurasthenia, moral insanity, and manic-depressive insanity were reclassified as modern psychiatric disorders like depression or bipolar disorder. Shell shock is now PTSD, and pseudoscientific labels like drapetomania are entirely discredited. Advances in understanding and reducing bias led to these changes.
