CBT is widely used for depression in teens and often shows strong results, but some cases require additional medication. How do clinicians decide when therapy is enough versus when medication should be introduced? Are there alternative or adjunct approaches that improve outcomes without heavy reliance on drugs?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be very effective for teen depression, especially in mild to moderate cases. It helps teens identify negative thought patterns, build coping skills, and change behaviors that reinforce low mood.
However, CBT alone isn’t always enough. Severe depression, suicidal thoughts, or co-occurring conditions may require a combined approach, including medication, family involvement, and lifestyle support.
