Can OCD Show Up Differently in Young People?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder can manifest as repetitive thoughts, rituals, or strict routines. In preteens and teens, it can also appear as perfectionism or compulsive checking behaviors. How can parents and teachers spot OCD early without labeling normal habits as pathology? What strategies support daily functioning while addressing symptoms?

I believe OCD can look different in young people. Children and teens might show it as repeated checking, excessive rules-following, or intrusive thoughts they can’t explain. Sometimes it appears as irritability, avoidance, or perfectionism rather than classic compulsions. Early recognition and support are important for managing it effectively.

It might also show up as strict or ridged play when they are kids. They have a certain way of playing with their toys and think others might not be doing it right....
