When that happens, I usually slow things down and try not to respond in the same emotional tone. If I notice the reaction is bigger than the situation, I take a short pause instead of pushing the conversation forward.
What helps most afterward is coming back to the point without blame, acknowledging the emotional spike, and resetting the tone. A simple “that came out stronger than I meant” or “let’s reframe this” can reopen the conversation without making anyone feel cornered.
