Some people become completely quiet when another person raises their voice or becomes upset. They may struggle to explain themselves even when they know what they want to say. Why does anger from others cause this shutdown response, and how can it affect close relationships?

I sometimes shut down when someone gets angry with me. My mind goes blank, and finding the right words suddenly becomes difficult. Staying quiet feels easier than saying something that could make the situation worse. It probably looks like indifference, but that’s not what’s happening.

When someone shuts down during anger or conflict, it can be because their brain sees the situation as threatening and goes into a protective mode. They may focus on avoiding escalation rather than expressing themselves. Over time, this can create distance in relationships because important feelings and problems never get properly addressed.
