Mental health symptoms can affect communication, household responsibilities, and emotional closeness. Conversations about these changes can easily sound like criticism. How can couples discuss the impact of anxiety, depression, or other conditions without blaming each other or making one person responsible for fixing everything?

I think couples can make these conversations easier by focusing on how they feel rather than pointing fingers. Saying “I’ve been struggling lately” sounds very different from “you’re making everything difficult.” Listening without immediately defending yourself can also help both people feel understood instead of judged.

Couples can talk about mental health without blaming each other by focusing on what is happening rather than who is responsible. Saying, “You seem really stressed lately. Is there anything I can do?” feels more supportive than “Why are you acting like this?” It’s also okay to say, “I’m here for you, but I can’t fix everything.”

I started having a better relationship with my partner when we focused more on how we felt rather than trying to blame each other for the challenges that we were facing. It helped changed the whole situation going forward because I felt more at peace than when my partner used to blame me for what was happening in our relationship.
