Parents often want to reassure a child who has obsessive-compulsive disorder, especially when the child is frightened by intrusive thoughts. But constant reassurance may not always help. How can parents provide emotional support while avoiding responses that accidentally strengthen compulsive behaviors or make the child more dependent on reassurance?

Parents can help by being patient and understanding rather than treating the child’s compulsions as simply bad behavior. Listening without judgment and keeping routines calm can make a difference. It’s also important not to constantly reassure or participate in compulsions, since that can sometimes reinforce them. Professional support can help families handle OCD more effectively.
