The first therapy appointment can feel awkward when someone does not know what they are expected to discuss. Some people worry they need to explain everything perfectly. What should someone actually prepare before a first therapy session, and is it okay to arrive without knowing where to begin?

The first session probably feels awkward because you don’t really know what to expect. I’d just go in with a few thoughts about what has been bothering me and be honest about how I’m feeling. I wouldn’t worry too much about saying everything perfectly on the first visit.

The first therapy appointment can be a little uncomfortable, especially if you’re not used to talking about personal things with someone new. It can help to mention what brought you to therapy and anything that’s been bothering you lately. The therapist can ask questions and help guide the conversation from there.

It’s completely okay to show up without knowing where to begin. Personally, I’d just make a few notes about what’s been bothering me, how long it’s been going on, and what I’d like help with. After that, the therapist can ask questions and guide the conversation, so there’s no need to have everything figured out beforehand.
