How do you communicate mental health needs to friends and family?

Honestly, this is a big issue for many people including me. Growing up, we weren’t really taught to talk about feelings like that. All we hear them say is ““be strong” or “man up.” I remember the first time I told my friend I wasn’t okay mentally, he thought I was joking because until someone runs mad, that's when they believe you have mental issues.

I also grew up bottling up my feelings. I keep my mental health issues to myself because I do not want to burden other people. In addition, I know that my family won’t listen to me. In terms of friends, I talk to some close friends about my mental health issues, but I do not disclose everything to them.

I am not very comfortable talking about mental health with a lot of people even when they are my family or friends. I can share only with a few people. For instance, I can share with my parents or my sister.

I don't go about discussing my mental health issues with everyone. I just do with a few people that have proven to be good listeners and no hasty advisers. I have just two people like that in my space. And I always set a calm atmosphere to have such discussions with them.

I try to be honest and specific about what I’m feeling and what kind of support I need. Sometimes I choose a calm moment to explain, other times I write it down. Listening to their questions and setting boundaries helps too.

I have communicated and talked about my problems with my family members, but it does not work. Sometimes you have to deal with your problems alone and this is a reality. Being isolated and lonely can cause severe damage to one's mental health, but we are left with no options.

I try to be honest but clear, sharing what I need without overwhelming them. Sometimes I use examples or small requests, like asking for space or checking in. Choosing the right time and trusted people makes a big difference.

I'd just talk to them about it. If they actually care about you, then they will do what they can to help you as much as possible.
