After an intense argument, people sometimes remember certain words or moments very strongly while forgetting other parts of the conversation. Strong emotions can influence how events are interpreted afterward. How does anger affect memory and perception during conflict, and why can two people remember the same argument so differently?

Anger can make people remember an argument as harsher than it actually was, especially when they’re focused on the one comment that hurt them most. Small details get lost, while the words that felt insulting stick around for years. That’s how two people can leave the same argument convinced they were the one who got mistreated, with neither willing to reconsider their version.

Anger can distort your memory. What is hurting you would be on your mind all day and you would forget some other things no matter how important they are.
