When someone in the family has depression, conversations can become strangely difficult. Simple questions may feel demanding, while silence can be mistaken for anger or disinterest. How can families communicate better without constantly asking the person to explain their mood or making every interaction about the depression?

I think depression can change family communication in subtle ways. Someone may talk less, avoid conversations, or respond with short answers because they don’t have much emotional energy. Family members may misunderstand this as anger or disinterest. Over time, everyone can become more careful around each other, making honest conversations even harder.
