People may detach to avoid pain, but it can also harm connection. When does emotional distance become necessary, and when does it become harmful?

I think it is neglect as well as detachment, some people neglect, and some people detach.

I think emotional distance becomes necessary when it protects you from ongoing harm, manipulation, or overwhelming stress. It becomes harmful when it's used to avoid vulnerability, communication, or problems that need to be addressed. The difference often comes down to whether it's creating space for healing or preventing genuine connection.
