Is Watching Sports a Hobby or Escape?

Sports fans often say watching games gives them joy and release. Do you think being a spectator provides the same emotional lift as playing?

I watch sports sometimes and I think it is more of an escape than just a hobby. When we watch sports we will forget about out problems and pains for a couple of hours. Even after the match ends, we will be discussing about the outcome of the match with friends and family for a long time and we try to forget all issues we have in our life. This is nothing but just an escape.

Sports keep me sane. It’s one thing that I enjoyed doing a lot. I love how we watch the game and yell at players who can’t hear us 🤣. The noise becomes a kind of peace especially if it's your favourite team playing. When it’s over, reality crawls back in, but for those few hours, it’s just all joy and sweat memories

Watching sports can definitely bring joy and excitement, but it’s different from playing. As a spectator, you feel connection and adrenaline vicariously, but the physical effort, teamwork, and personal challenge of playing provide a deeper sense of accomplishment and emotional release.

I think it can be both a hobby and an escape, depending on how it’s used. Watching sports gives real emotional highs, connection with others, and a break from routine. That’s valid. But it’s not quite the same as playing. Playing adds physical engagement, skill-building, and a deeper sense of involvement. Watching is more passive, while playing is active and immersive.

I do feel that those who watch sports and watch sports often tend to do it as an escape more than a hobby.

I know my son, he is 18 now, and I have found that he tends to watch every football game he has access to and has also been spending time watching darts when that has aired, and I feel he does that as an escape.
