While religion can be comforting and good for mental health, sometimes it might also cause trauma. Some of the symptoms associated with religious trauma are
Shame and self hatred
Hyper-vigilance
Poor decision making ability
Inability to draw boundaries
Poor sexual relationship
If you are experiencing some of these symptoms, it might be related to religious trauma.

Religious trauma is emotional or psychological distress that can come from harmful religious experiences.

It can happen when beliefs are enforced through fear, guilt, or strict control, or when questioning is discouraged. This may lead to anxiety, shame, confusion, or difficulty trusting one’s own thoughts and decisions.

Not everyone experiences religion this way, but for those who do, recovery often involves rebuilding personal identity, questioning harmful messages, and finding supportive environments where beliefs can be explored safely.
