Family history increases schizophrenia risk, but it’s not deterministic. Environment, trauma, and drug use also play roles. Should we screen high-risk individuals earlier?

Schizophrenia is influenced by both genetics and environmental factors. While having a family history increases the risk, environmental triggers, like stress or substance abuse, can also play a significant role in its onset and development.

I think early screening for high-risk individuals makes sense. Family history raises risk, but it’s not a guarantee. Identifying signs early, especially combined with support for stress, trauma, or substance use, can help with prevention, early treatment, and better long-term outcomes.
