Brand Name:Thorazine

Generic Name: Chlorpromazine

Primary Use: Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder, Severe Behavioural Problems, Nausea, Hiccups

Dosage Forms:
  • Oral tablets of 10mg, 25mg, 50mg and 100 and 250mg
  • SpansuleRT sustained release capsule of 30mg, 75mg, 150mg
  • Ampuls of 25mg/mL
  • Multi-dose vials of 25mg/mL
  • Syrup of 10mg/5mL
  • Oral solution of 20g/mL
  • Suppositories of 25mg, 100mg
Common Side Effects:
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Weight gain
  • Constipation
  • Blurred vision
  • Impotence
  • Drowsiness
  • Anxiety
  • Breast swelling or discharge
  • Stuffy nose
  • Swelling of hands and feet
  • Dry mouth
  • Menstrual cycle changes
Serious side effects:
  • Eye symptoms: blurred and disturbed vision, eye pain/swelling, seeing halos around lights
  • Cardiovascular symptoms: irregular and pounding heart beats, fluttering in chest, passing out/light-headedness, shortness of breath.
  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, weakness of arms/legs, loss of coordination, very stiff muscles, high fever, tremors.
How long should it be taken?

As per doctor’s advice.

Effectiveness:
  • Thorazine is efficacious for short-term use in combating primary positive symptoms of schizophrenia.
  • It is also found to be effective for short-term use in acute psychosis controls aggressive behaviour.
  • Thorazine is effective in other disorders such as intractable hiccups, bipolar I (acute manic type), intraoperative nausea and vomiting control.
