What Happens When People Start Treating Fictional Relationships as Real Relationships?

Fans sometimes become deeply invested in fictional couples, actors who play them, or imagined relationships between celebrities. When does ordinary fandom turn into entitlement toward performers? How have social media platforms blurred the boundary between enjoying a fictional relationship and expecting actors to behave like their characters?

When people become deeply attached to fictional relationships, the emotions can still feel surprisingly real even though the characters aren’t. That attachment can create comfort, excitement, or heartbreak, but problems arise when fictional expectations start replacing realistic ideas about relationships, love, or how people should behave toward each other.

I think this kind of fandom becomes toxic when fans forget that actors are real people, not extensions of their characters. Expecting them to date, act, or behave like their fictional roles is completely unreasonable. Social media has made that entitlement worse by making performers feel constantly accessible.
