Social comparison often gets stronger during mental health struggles because the mind becomes more sensitive to perceived gaps between yourself and others. When energy is low or self-esteem is shaky, even normal updates from others can feel like reminders of what feels missing.
It also narrows attention. Instead of seeing a full picture of people’s lives, the brain tends to focus on highlights and assumes those are the standard. That mix of low mood and selective focus makes comparison feel automatic and harder to step away from.
