Fatigue, irritability, and disengagement are often overlooked. Why do these signs go unnoticed, and what policies can help workplaces identify and support affected employees?

I think subtle signs of depression get missed at work because people often hide how they feel. Many just keep doing their tasks while struggling internally, so coworkers assume everything is fine. Also, workplaces usually focus on productivity, so emotional changes or quiet struggles don’t always get noticed.

They’re easy to miss because they look like normal stress or personality, and many employees mask them to avoid stigma. Managers may also lack training to spot early burnout signals.

Policies that help include regular check-ins, anonymous pulse surveys, workload tracking, mental health support, and training leaders to recognize and respond early.

Many workplaces only really bother about productivity in their staff. They always attribute an underperforming staff to a bad staff. They never even reason that the staff might be struggling with something.
