Bright lights, noise, or crowded spaces can increase stress and confusion, especially for people experiencing anxiety, PTSD, or psychosis. Managing sensory input can be important. What environments feel overwhelming? What strategies help reduce sensory stress?

Sensory overload can worsen mental health symptoms because the brain has limited capacity to process stimulation. When there’s too much input, like noise, bright lights, or crowds, the nervous system stays in a heightened state of alert, which can increase anxiety, irritability, confusion, and fatigue.
For conditions like anxiety, PTSD, or psychosis, this heightened arousal can intensify existing symptoms. The brain struggles to filter what matters, so everything feels urgent or threatening.
