Some children become unusually quiet or avoid talking about emotional problems because they worry about disappointing their parents, causing trouble, or being misunderstood. Why do children sometimes hide anxiety, sadness, or other mental health symptoms, and how can parents make it easier for them to open up?

I think some children hide their feelings because they’re afraid of being judged, getting in trouble, or worrying their parents. I’ve seen kids become unusually quiet instead of saying they’re struggling. Parents can make things easier by listening calmly, avoiding immediate criticism, and letting children talk when they feel ready.

Children may hide mental health struggles because they don’t know how to explain what they’re feeling or worry that adults won’t understand. Some may fear being judged, punished, or treated differently. Others might think their problems aren’t serious enough to mention. A supportive, non-judgmental home can make it easier for them to speak openly.

I think some children hide mental health symptoms because they don’t want to seem different or become a burden to their parents. They might also worry that adults won’t understand. Giving them regular opportunities to talk, without immediately trying to fix everything, can make it easier for them to share what’s going on.

I believe that's because they’re afraid their parents will worry, get angry, or not understand what they’re going through. Some may also feel embarrassed or think they should handle it themselves. Having calm conversations and listening without immediately judging or giving advice can make it easier for them to open up.
