Withdrawal, somatic complaints, or aggression can all signal anxiety. Why do stress responses vary, and how can caregivers and educators respond effectively?

Stress shows up differently because everyone processes emotions in their own way. Some people shut down, others get physical symptoms or act out. I think the best response is patience and paying attention to patterns. Caregivers and teachers helping someone feel safe, listened to, and understood can really help reduce anxiety.

Being in a constant state of fear when you hear your parents argue causes a child to continuously have anxiety even after the parents are done arguing. I grew up in a household where my father verbally abused my mom, and he also caused her to break a coffee mug one time and she had to go to the hospital to get stitches. I would often get nervous around my father years after that happened and had to learn to shut out their yelling when I was a teenager. It also caused anger issues in me as well, I'm still working on them and I'm much better than I was when I was in my early 20's.
