Someone may recognize that therapy, medication, or counseling could help but still feel guilty about needing support. They might believe they should handle things independently. Why does needing mental health treatment create guilt for some people, and how can families and friends respond without reinforcing that feeling?

People may feel guilty about needing mental health support because they’ve been taught to handle problems on their own. Some worry they’re burdening family or friends, while others feel they should be stronger. Social stigma can make those feelings worse, even when asking for help is completely understandable.

Some people feel guilty about needing mental health support because they’ve learned to see asking for help as a weakness or something they should handle alone. Families and friends can help by listening without judgment, avoiding comments about being strong enough, and treating support as a normal part of taking care of yourself.
