Social withdrawal is common in schizophrenia and may come from fear, confusion, or difficulty processing social cues. It is not always about avoiding people but protecting mental energy. What helps someone stay socially connected? How can friends support without overwhelming them?

People with schizophrenia may withdraw socially for several reasons. Symptoms like paranoia or hallucinations can make social situations feel unsafe or overwhelming. Negative symptoms, such as low motivation or emotional flatness, can also reduce interest in interaction. On top of that, stigma and past negative experiences often lead to isolation.
