Why does chronic stress affect memory and concentration so strongly?

Have you experienced forgetting things more often during stressful periods, even basic details? How do you manage focus when your mind feels overloaded?

Chronic stress affects memory and concentration because it keeps the brain in a prolonged alert state, which disrupts how it processes and stores information. The areas responsible for focus and memory become less efficient, while the stress response system takes up more mental resources. This imbalance makes it harder to filter distractions, retain details, and think clearly, so even simple tasks feel mentally scattered or harder to manage.

Stress can certainly make people forget simple things. That happens because so much mental energy is being spent elsewhere. When my mind feels overloaded, I find it helps to slow down, write things down, and focus on one task at a time instead of juggling everything at once.
