Even replying to messages or sitting with friends can require more effort during depression. Someone may want company but lack the energy to participate normally. Why does depression make social interaction feel exhausting, and how can friends stay connected without creating pressure?

Depression can make social interaction feel exhausting because it can affect energy, motivation, concentration, and emotional responsiveness. Even simple things like replying to messages, making conversation, or pretending to be cheerful can feel like tasks requiring effort. Some people may also withdraw because they fear being a burden or simply don’t have the energy to explain how they feel.
