For children and teenagers, parents are usually involved in accessing treatment, however, even for adults, making their their own treatment decisions can be hard. Adults are also affected by spouses, family members, parents for example, and friends and sometimes cannot make their own decision. Where should family involvement end, and how much say should the person receiving treatment have?

Sometimes mental health treatment becomes a family decision because the person's condition can affect everyone at home. Family members may help with appointments, daily support, finances, or noticing changes in behavior. Ideally, the person receiving treatment should have as much say as possible, while family involvement provides support rather than control.
