Are there any conditions that can go undiagnosed?

Are there any mental health conditions that often go overlooked? Maybe even undiagnosed? I figure we all have mental conditions we don't even know about, maybe it lives dormant in us, or it doesn't affect us like some others. But are there any conditions that can go unchecked for years or even a lifetime? Like, are there some conditions we'll never know we even had?

Yeah, I think a lot of those conditions go unnoticed. I’ve met people who only found out they had ADHD as adults and it’s the same with anxiety, they just thought it was stress.

Yes, conditions like mild anxiety, dysthymia, ADHD in adults, or high-functioning autism often go undiagnosed for years. Symptoms can be subtle, masked by coping strategies, or mistaken for personality traits, meaning some people may never realize they had a mental health condition until much later—or even never.

Definitely, a lot of conditions remain undiagnosed over years. ADHD, anxiety, or thyroid conditions can be very well unnoticed as the symptoms are more or less the same or probably appear insignificant. In some cases, they are not noticed by doctors, or individuals and they simply learn to live with them without noticing that something is wrong. Frequent checkups can help to spot those things early.

I have ADHD......wasn't officially diagnosed until mid 20's although I think I've had it my whole life.

I also think I am on the Autism spectrum. I've been looking to get diagnosed but my doctor thinks that I'll have to pay for that out of pocket because my insurance won't pay for that. Why is it that insurance will pay for that when you're a kid but now when you're an adult? I think Autism is something we know more about now than they did when I was a kid.

Yes, quite a few mental health conditions can go undiagnosed. Conditions like high-functioning anxiety, mild depression, ADHD in adults, or certain personality disorders often fly under the radar because symptoms can be subtle, masked by coping strategies, or mistaken for stress or lifestyle issues. Early recognition is key.

Conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or even PTSD can go undiagnosed, especially if symptoms are mild, inconsistent, or hidden. People might adapt around them, blame stress, or avoid seeking help, which lets the condition remain unnoticed for years.

Some people might have learned to hide their symptoms because they were labeled as bad or they might have gotten in trouble for them as a kid. So they went undiagnosed as a kid to avoid getting into trouble and now they are learning that the stuff that they hid was an actual diagnoses.
