When one family member struggles with a mental health condition, other relatives may gradually take on extra responsibilities. A sibling might become more protective, while parents may become overly involved. How can families recognize these changing roles and prevent support from turning into resentment or unhealthy dependence?

I think mental health problems can definitely change family roles. For example, a parent struggling emotionally may need more support from their partner or children, while another family member takes on extra responsibilities. That can bring people closer, but it can also create stress if the new roles continue for too long.

When one family member struggles, it’s natural for others to step in, but constant caregiving can sometimes change relationships and create hidden stress. Families can help by sharing responsibilities, encouraging independence, and making space for everyone’s feelings. Support works best when it comes from care rather than guilt or obligation.
