A small correction from a partner, friend, teacher, or coworker can sometimes feel much more painful than expected. The reaction may involve shame, anger, or wanting to withdraw. Why does criticism feel personal for some people, and how can past experiences or low self-esteem contribute?

Criticism can feel personal or become a big issue when you have low self-esteem. And some people tie their identity to their work, so any criticism can be hurtful to them.

Sometimes criticism gets under my skin, especially when it comes from someone I care about or catches me off guard. I might replay the conversation in my head longer than I should. With time, I’ve learned that not every bit of criticism is an attack, though the way someone delivers it can make a huge difference.

Criticism can be devastating, especially when it touches an insecurity or comes from someone whose opinion matters to us. Sometimes even helpful feedback feels like a personal attack, and we keep replaying it long after the conversation ends. Learning to separate what someone says about our actions from how we see ourselves can make it easier to take feedback without letting it damage our confidence. Criticism sometimes touches me personally but I try hard not to feel bad about it.

I view criticism constructively without emotions. I always want to get better and feel happy when others point out the things that I am not doing right. I care more about such because that is how I can be able to become better.
