Anger is sometimes easier to express than sadness, disappointment, embarrassment, or fear. Someone may become argumentative when what they actually feel is rejected or ignored. Why can anger hide more vulnerable emotions, and how can recognizing the underlying feeling change the way relationship conflicts are handled?

I think anger can sometimes cover up hurt feelings because being angry may feel easier than admitting you’re hurt, rejected, or disappointed. It doesn’t happen every time, of course, but I’ve noticed that people can become defensive when something has affected them more deeply than they want to show.
