A child may erase homework repeatedly, avoid answering questions, or become upset after making a small mistake. Parents might assume they are simply being sensitive. Why does fear of mistakes develop in some children, and how can adults encourage learning without making perfection feel necessary?

I think some children become anxious about mistakes when they feel they’re expected to get everything right. Constant criticism, comparison, or high expectations can make mistakes seem much more serious than they really are. A child may start avoiding new things simply because they’re afraid of disappointing others.
