When a family member has bipolar disorder, everyday planning can sometimes become complicated by changes in mood, energy, sleep, or decision-making. How can families make practical plans that remain flexible during depressive or manic episodes without treating the person as incapable of making their own decisions?

I think bipolar disorder can make family planning more complicated because mood changes, treatment decisions, and stability may all need consideration. It doesn’t mean someone shouldn’t have children. I’d imagine having honest conversations with a partner and qualified healthcare professionals can help people make thoughtful, personal decisions.
