I think it really depends on the person. Some people may find it very useful to meditate from time to time, while others may not be convinced it's as helpful as people make it out to be. But that is what you make of it. If it works for you, more power to you. If it doesn't, same. I think whatever works best for you is what works for you. 
I wouldn't say it's overhyped, but overrated in some cases. I just find a use for it myself. But I know there are many people who do find it very helpful to their mental health.
