Managing Sibling Rivalry

Competition and conflict between siblings are common. Should parents intervene immediately or allow children to resolve issues themselves? What strategies reduce long-term resentment and mental harm?

I believe it is better for parents to get involved where it is necessary. That is a sure way to ensure that matters are swiftly handled.

Also, parents should be unbiased when judging matters to avoid any of the kids thinking that he or she is not getting a favourable judgement on the matter.

Sibling conflict is normal. I think parents shouldn’t intervene immediately unless things become hurtful or unsafe. Sometimes letting children try to resolve issues teaches negotiation. Parents can guide calm conversations, encourage empathy, and avoid favoritism to reduce long-term resentment and emotional harm.

I think parents should only get involved if the children are hurting each other. My sister and I used to fight when we were younger, but we eventually grew out of it once we were both in High School. My mom would try to intervene when we were being verbally abusive, she would ground us from games or hanging out with friends.

As someone who grew up with two brothers and also a mother to 4 children who are much older now, I have found that when it comes to siblings having their differences, it is always best to leave them to try and resolve the issues themselves, but always keep an eye on them, should you need to intervene.

I feel if you intervene too soon, you miss the opportunity to see whether your children can resolve the issue themselves, which is huge when it comes to development and social skills.
