A teenager experiencing depression may answer with one word, stay in their room, or avoid family discussions. Parents may interpret this as disrespect. Why can depression make family communication difficult for teenagers, and how can parents stay connected without turning every conversation into an interrogation?

I think teenagers dealing with depression may avoid family conversations because explaining how they feel can seem exhausting or uncomfortable. They might also worry about being judged, misunderstood, or becoming a burden. Sometimes staying quiet feels easier than trying to describe emotions they don’t fully understand themselves.
