Why Even Minor Criticism Feels Deeply Personal?

Mental health struggles can heighten sensitivity to feedback. Even constructive comments may feel like personal rejection or failure. How do you process criticism during vulnerable periods? What helps you respond more calmly?

When I’m already feeling low or overwhelmed, even normal feedback can hit harder than it should. I try to pause before reacting, because my first interpretation is usually more emotional than accurate in that moment.

What helps is separating the message from the feeling it triggers. I’ll reread it later when I’m calmer, or ask myself what part is actually useful instead of focusing on how it made me feel. If needed, I also ask for clarification so it becomes more concrete and less personal.
