A sudden sound, unexpected touch, or movement nearby can produce an unusually strong reaction in someone with PTSD. Friends or family may not understand why the response is so intense. Why does trauma affect the body's response to sudden events, and how can this show up in daily life?

PTSD can leave the nervous system stuck in a heightened state of alertness after trauma. Because the brain remains focused on detecting possible danger, sudden sounds, movements, or unexpected situations can trigger a strong startle response. It isn’t simply being overly sensitive, but part of how the body reacts to perceived threats.
